Understanding the silver rate in India

Silver is priced per kilogram in India, unlike gold which is quoted per 10 grams. The rate follows the international price, the rupee-dollar rate and import duty, but silver is considerably more volatile than gold because roughly half of demand is industrial — solar panels, electronics and brazing alloys — rather than investment or ornament.

999 is 99.9% pure and is the standard for bullion and digital silver. 925, sterling silver, is 92.5% pure and is the usual standard for silver jewellery, because pure silver is too soft to hold a form. 900 is traditional coin silver.

Unlike gold, BIS hallmarking of silver remains voluntary in India. HUID-based silver hallmarking was introduced on a voluntary basis from 1 September 2025. When buying silver jewellery it is worth asking the jeweller directly whether the piece is hallmarked.

The rates here are for the metal alone, excluding 3% GST and any making charges.

Frequently asked questions

What is the silver rate today in India?

The live 999 fine silver rate per kilogram is shown at the top of this page, with the date it was last updated. Rates by weight and by purity are in the tables above.

Why is silver quoted per kilogram and gold per 10 grams?

Convention, driven by value. Silver is a fraction of the price of gold by weight, so a kilogram is a practical trading unit. Quoting silver per 10 grams would give an awkwardly small number for everyday use.

What is the difference between 999 and 925 sterling silver?

999 is 99.9% pure and is used for bullion and digital silver. 925, sterling, is 92.5% pure with the balance usually copper, which makes it hard enough for jewellery and cutlery. Pure silver is too soft to hold a setting.

Is silver hallmarking mandatory in India?

No. Unlike gold, BIS hallmarking of silver is voluntary. HUID-based silver hallmarking was introduced voluntarily from 1 September 2025. Ask your jeweller whether a specific piece carries a hallmark.

Why is silver more volatile than gold?

About half of silver demand is industrial — solar, electronics, brazing — so the price responds to the manufacturing cycle as well as to investment demand. The silver market is also much smaller than gold's, so the same flow of money moves the price further.

Do these rates include GST?

No. Rates shown are for the metal alone and exclude 3% GST. Silver jewellery additionally carries making charges.

Is the rate on this page the price I will pay?

No. It is indicative. The transaction price is set at the time of the transaction by Augmont, our digital silver partner, and may differ from the rate shown here.
