Understanding the gold rate in India
The gold rate in India moves with the international spot price, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, import duty and local demand. Because gold is imported to meet most of India's demand, a weaker rupee raises the rupee price of gold even when the dollar price has not moved.
Rates are quoted by fineness. 999 is 99.9% pure gold, the purity used for bullion and for digital gold. 916, commonly called 22 karat, is 91.6% pure and is the standard for most Indian gold jewellery. 750, or 18 karat, is 75% pure and is used where a harder alloy is needed, typically in stone-set pieces.
The rates on this page are for the metal alone. A jewellery purchase also carries making charges, which vary by design and by jeweller, and 3% GST. Digital gold carries the same 3% GST but no making charges, which is why a gram of digital gold costs less than a gram of the same purity in jewellery.
Hallmarking is separate from price. BIS hallmarking has been mandatory for gold jewellery and artefacts in covered districts since June 2021, extended to 9 karat from July 2025. It certifies purity; it does not set the rate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate today in India?
The live 24K 999 rate is shown at the top of this page, with the date it was last updated. It is refreshed every morning. Rates by weight and by purity, including 22 karat and 18 karat, are in the tables above.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?
24 karat is 99.9% pure gold, written as 999. 22 karat is 91.6% pure, written as 916, and is the usual standard for Indian jewellery. 18 karat is 75% pure, written as 750. Purity is the only difference in the metal value — the rate for each is the 999 rate multiplied by its fineness.
Why is 24K gold not used for most jewellery?
Pure gold is soft. Alloying it with other metals at 22 or 18 karat makes it hard enough to hold a setting and survive daily wear. That is why bullion and digital gold are 999, while rings and necklaces are usually 916 or 750.
Do these rates include GST and making charges?
No. The rates on this page are for the metal alone and exclude 3% GST. Jewellery additionally carries making charges, which differ by design and by jeweller. Digital gold carries GST but no making charges.
Is the rate on this page the price I will pay?
No. It is indicative and published for information. The price you actually transact at is set at the time of the transaction by Augmont, our digital gold partner, and may differ from the rate shown here.
How often is this rate updated?
Once every morning. The date of the last update is shown beneath the headline rate. Gold trades continuously on international markets, so the live market price moves through the day after our update.
What moves the gold rate in India?
The international spot price, the rupee against the dollar, import duty, and domestic demand — which rises around festivals and the wedding season. Because most of India's gold is imported, a weaker rupee pushes the local price up even when the dollar price is flat.
